INSPIRE

INSPIRE stands for lifestyle INterventionS for PaIn Relief. This study is funded by the Advanced Pain Discovery Platform (ADPD).

The purpose of this study is to significantly increase our knowledge on how specific lifestyle factors can help relief pain in patients with osteoarthritis (OA).

Knee arthritis affects over 8 million people in the UK and has no cure. Pain is the main symptom, which can lead to disability and loss of quality of life. Previous research has shown that the types of bacteria that reside in our gut as well as the chemicals that they produce have implications on inflammation. Further, previous research has shown that gentle exercise can reduce inflammation and knee pain.

This study involves taking dietary fibre supplementcalled inulin and performing routine excercises on an app.

Knee OA patients will be asked to either take a dietary supplement, complete a gentle exercise routine, or do both (i.e. take a supplement and carry out an exercise routine).

The intervention will last 6 weeks. There will be two study visits before and after the 6 weeks. On each visit, we will collect blood and faecal samples as well as pain and anxiety measures.
